The Appalachian Area

The Appalachian area is a specific area in the Appalachian mountains that extends from the bottom of New York to the tops of Georgia, Alabama, and  Mississippi. Thus, the areas that are the main focus are highlighted in purple and yellow.

The history of West Virginia has had limited interaction with her surrounding neighbors. Thus, many cultural and linguistical aspects are preserved. Some examples are the stories, music, and traditions, which are passed from generation to generation. these influence not only the language but also the accent of the people. With little outside influence due to geographical location and local marriages, the oral culture has been preserved more than any other state, which has created a language trail for interested individuals to trace back to the Scottish English. Thus, The three main influences to the Appalachian accent being closely related to the native Scottish English immigrants who settled the area. In conclusion, the accidental influences that come from this are the marital influence, geographical location, and the overarching emphasis of an oral culture.
